Context
The complexity and urgency of the challenges facing Africa now require, the power of science and innovation. Yet, scientific research in the continent still suffers from several ills, including the lack of African leadership in the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge.
The African continent, host about 12% of the global population, but produces less than 1% of all academic publications, placing it at a huge disadvantage in scientific progress. Scientific writing and publication have become a key component of today’s research ecosystem, often used to assess the credibility of scientific work and maintain high standards in research. The number and quality of published articles promote career advancement and peer recognition, and attract the funding required to drive scientific excellence and innovation. But the low proportion of first authors from African based institutions – including for studies addressing African issues – is extremely worrying across a wide variety of research disciplines.
