The Role of Think Tanks in Enhancing the Visibility of Women in Africa
According to Amnesty International, women around the world ‘still face discrimination on the basis of their gender’ despite tremendous efforts by women’s rights movements to address gender inequality. Addressing gender inequality is therefore one of the main priorities across many regions worldwide. In the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) region for instance, ECCAS ministers in charge of gender, in 2019, recognized and reiterated the necessity to promote ‘gender equality’ in order to ‘enable women to fully exercise their role in political and economic development‘. To that end, a partnership to promote women’s rights and encourage their participation in political and economic spheres was signed between UN Women and ECCAS in 2022. The agreement has as main objective to advance women’s rights and enhance their visibility and effective participation in policy and decision-making circles. This webinar will explore various dimensions of women’s invisibility, but more importantly, it will question the normalization of women’s invisibility when it concerns power. What steps can think tanks take to normalize women’s visibility in key areas of economic and political life in Africa? These is the key question that the Nkafu Policy Institute wishes to answer in this webinar.
Objective of the webinar
This webinar’s main objective is to talk about women’s rights as seen through women in positions of power. More specifically, it will:
- Explore various dimensions of women’s invisibility
- Draw attention to the fact that women’s rights are aspects of human rights
- Reiterate that women still face discrimination when it comes to issues of political influence
- Discuss the role think tanks can play to strengthen the power of women
- Propose in-depth policy recommendations to stakeholders on how to enhance the public visibility of women in Africa
Our target audience is the policymakers, human rights organizations, think tanks, government agencies, diplomatic bodies, academics, researchers, international organizations, and individuals interested in women/human rights.
The event will take place online, through a zoom with panel discussions by gender experts. It will also be live streamed on Foretia Foundation’s social media platforms.
People are informed and educated about women’s rights in a rapidly changing world and the role that think tanks can play in bringing about change.
