The Role of Think Tanks in Enhancing the Visibility of Women in Africa
Background
According to Amnesty International, women around the world ‘still face discrimination on the basis of their gender’ despite tremendous efforts by women’s rights movements to address gender inequality. Addressing gender inequality is therefore one of the main priorities across many regions worldwide. In the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) region for instance, ECCAS ministers in charge of gender, in 2019, recognized and reiterated the necessity to promote ‘gender equality’ in order to ‘enable women to fully exercise their role in political and economic development‘. To that end, a partnership to promote women’s rights and encourage their participation in political and economic spheres was signed between UN Women and ECCAS in 2022. The agreement has as main objective to advance women’s rights and enhance their visibility and effective participation in policy and decision-making circles. This webinar will explore various dimensions of women’s invisibility, but more importantly, it will question the normalization of women’s invisibility when it concerns power. What steps can think tanks take to normalize women’s visibility in key areas of economic and political life in Africa? These is the key question that the Nkafu Policy Institute wishes to answer in this webinar.
