Background

The Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation works to catalyze Africa’s economic transformation through social entrepreneurship, science and technology, innovation, public health, and progressive policies that create economic opportunities for all. Our areas of work include sustainable development, science and innovation, health, leadership, education, entrepreneurship, economic and public policy. The Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation is an umbrella non-profit institution with several departments including the Nkafu Policy Institute, the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center, Communications, and the Sustainable Development Programs.

The Nkafu Policy Institute is a leading African think tank with a mission to provide independent, in-dept and insightful policy recommendations that allow all Africans to prosper in free, fair, democratic and sustainable economies. The Institute brings together leading analysts, experts, and contributors from across the globe in the fields of governance and democracy; health and education; peace and security; science and technology; and economic policy. Our reputation is founded on independence, rigor, and innovation.

The Institute has four divisions:

The Economic Policy Division explores how free-market systems can help address a range of economic issues in Africa and Cameroon especially. It conducts in-dept research and provides cutting-edge economic analyses. This section educates the public in the understanding of economic issues affecting their daily lives. This division is currently in search of 01 (one) intern.

The Education and Health Division focuses on research and evidence-based approaches to key health, education and development policy challenges. This division is currently in search of 01 (one) intern.

The Peace and Security Division is focused essentially on the promotion of sustainable peace and development in Africa within the context of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, and the African Union Agenda 2063. This division is currently in search of 01 (one) intern.

The Democracy and Governance Division strives to promote the fundamental principles of democracy and governance, including free and fair elections, independent media, accountable and transparent governments, the rule of law and respect of human rights. This division is currently in search of 01 (one) intern.

Objectives 

The Nkafu Policy Institute is currently in search of  highly motivated persons to join the Nkafu team as interns to promote and advance our work. We target outstanding recent graduates who are interested in gaining practical experience in research, policy analysis, event planning, and project management.

Core duties  

  • Assist with a broad range of activities that support policy advancement at a regional or a national level such as organizing and reporting on research, seminars, conferences, and workshops.
  • Assist Research Fellows and Institute staff with projects, program-related research, and development, including participation in the planning and coordination of activities/events.
  • Complete research tasks as assigned, such as conducting literature reviews; finding, organizing, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Preparing memos, concept notes, presentations, briefs, reports, and presentations.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned by departmental staff or management.

Skills and Qualifications  

Ideal candidates will possess:

At least a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following fields:

  • Economics and business-related degrees
  • Social Sciences and Economics,
  • Public Health   
  • Peace and Security Studies
  • Governance and Democracy 
  • Any other field related to the subject areas of interest of the Institute.

  • Strong writing and research skills; must be able to distill relevant information from large data sets, reports, articles and academic papers.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in English and French.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint…).
  • Be a good communicator and team player.
  • Be able to multi-task, be extremely organized, and have meticulous attention to detail.
  • Desire to learn, take initiative, and suggest best practices with a willingness to take and implement constructive feedback and guidance.

What we offer Conditions of the Internship:

  • We offer three (3) months of full-time internship with leading experts and academics.
  • We equally offer transport allowance.
  • In-house training and access to the internet.
  • Our interns have full access to research seminars, round-tables, workshops, and discussion groups hosted by the Nkafu Policy Institute and its partners, in addition to conferences on a wide range of emerging issues critical to business and policy interests in Cameroon and Africa at large.
  • Interns residing out of Yaounde are responsible for their transportation to and from Yaounde.
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent the Foundation in any official capacity.
  • The purpose of the Internship Program is to complement an intern’s studies, not to lead to further employment with the Foundation. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
  • Interns are required to bring their own laptops upon starting their internship.
  • The intern will be evaluated at the end of the contract and due recognition of work will be issued in writing.
