Background

Access to healthcare services is a major challenge for many Cameroonians, encountering issues of availability, quality and accessibility. While efforts are made to improve the standards of healthcare in Cameroon, accessibility remains severely limited by cost and financial constraints. Population pays predominantly out of pocket to access care, leading to catastrophic health expenses and more impoverishment.

Private Health Insurance (PHI) has the potential to considerably improve affordability and accessibility to healthcare, but less than 2% of urban dwellers in Cameroon are under a PHI scheme [1]. Inadequate knowledge of how health insurance works, expensive premiums, complex administrative processes and most importantly, lack of trust in insurance companies hinders voluntary subscription to PHI in the country.

A substantial level of transparency is required from insurance providers, to build trust, gain and maintain health insurance subscribers. This webinar therefore seeks to explore the importance of trust and transparency in the private health insurance market, identify existing gaps, and discuss strategies to improve consumers’ confidence.

Objectives

The overall objective is to explore strategies to enhance Cameroonians’ confidence in Private Health Insurance.

More specifically:

  • Identify the factors contributing to consumers’ distrust in private health insurance providers.
  • Explore best practices for improving transparency within the private health insurance sector, including clear communication of policies and claims processes.
  • Propose actionable strategies for building trust in the private health insurance market.

Expected Outputs

The expected outputs are:

  • Improved knowledge of factors affecting health insurance subscription and coverage.
  • Enhanced understanding of the importance of trust and transparency in private health insurance.
  • Identification of practical strategies to overcome barriers to consumers’ trust.
